Tools - how do we work?

In our workshops we use a toolbox of resources, purpose-built by Secondary Futures, to help people explore the future in an organised, systematic way.

Extensively trialled and tested, our tools help people explore possible world futures, possible futures for New Zealand, and the implications of those futures for education. They also help people work out what their preferences for education in the future might be.

The toolbox comprises Trend Cards, Scenarios, Wildcards and Story Cards.

Trend Cards

From our comprehensive database of trends, likelihoods and possibilities for the future we have developed a range of "Possible Trend", "Probable Trend" and "Timeshift" cards that prompt people to think about the future.

Some of the cards are visual and some are text based.

Have a look at some of the examples of trends shown here and consider how these might impact on your future.

Scenario Cards

Based on scenarios devised by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Secondary Futures has designed four New Zealand scenarios which fit with our society and culture.

The scenarios help people drill down from the broad possibilities canvassed with the trends cards, to a deeper exploration of what is possible in education and help people identify their own preferences and values.

"Wildcards" are also used to challenge people's thinking.

What are People Saying?

Bob Frame, Landcare Research futures project:

"I've done a lot of work on futures thinking and these workshop resources are just fantastic - I'm gobsmacked!"
